Houraikaku, a Chinese restaurant located in Togane City, Chiba Prefecture, was established in 1967.
We visited this unique and long-established Chinese Cantonese restaurant, which will celebrate its 58th year in 2025!
What a unique appearance!
About a 7-minute walk from Togane Station, the exterior of the building suddenly appears.
It looks like a Chinese palace! Or should I call it Togane’s “Chinese Hall of Fame”?
The entrance is quite a complicated one (^^).
But that’s what I like about it. It’s full of individuality.

The decor is so “strong” that you might think you are in a theme park or on the set of a historical drama (……).
The appearance of the restaurant even gives one a strange sense of anticipation, as if to say, “I wouldn’t be surprised if you serve court cuisine here.
The restaurant is a calm, Showa-era retro space with spacious and comfortable seating, perfect for a quiet meal or for families and groups! Every night from 7:00 p.m., live erhu music is sometimes performed, allowing diners to enjoy traditional Chinese music along with their meal.
The decorations are also very cool and well aged! It’s like a Chinese restaurant of the Showa era.
The cooks, who are from China with special cooking license qualifications, use fresh ingredients from Tsukiji, Toyosu, and Tateyama fishing ports, and serve dishes using traditional recipes…! This looks promising!
Cantonese noodles with a clean and gentle taste

A bowl of soup with plenty of vegetables, chicken, and mushrooms. The soup is surprisingly light, despite the fact that it seems to be a starchy sauce. The salty taste is perfect for a cold day!
The clear soup is filled with Chinese cabbage, greens, chicken, mushrooms, carrots, and more. There is also a soy sauce flavor.
It has a rich yet refreshing aftertaste, and I could eat it every day…!
Colorful sweet-and-sour pork set (with salad, soup, rice, pickles, and apricot bean curd)
The sweet-and-sour sweet-and-sour pork is a perfect match of crunchy vegetables and crispy fried meat!
Notably, seasonal vegetables such as lotus root and pumpkin are also used, which are pleasing to the eye.
The dish is seasoned in a royal way that makes the rice go down a treat, and the volume is perfect as well. Finish off with a refreshing apricot bean curd.
Pengcai Geak may look “flashy” on the outside, but it is a warm restaurant on the inside!
Although Houzai Kaku is a bit eccentric, it is actually a very community-oriented restaurant.
During the Great East Japan Earthquake and typhoons,
It became an evacuation shelter for neighbors and served food to them. It has always been a “reliable presence” in the local community.
They are also particular about their cuisine, actively using local vegetables and ingredients,
This is exactly what “local production for local consumption” means!
